Nature4All Diversity Series

The Nature4All Diversity Series consists of workshops and events that are meant to uplift our BIPOC community with a connection to outdoor recreation. Generations of exclusion and danger have impacted black and brown individuals emphasizing the need for nature access to be acknowledged as a basic human right. While everyone is invited to join, Haw River Assembly extends a special welcome to individuals from BIPOC and marginalized communities to join our upcoming events. Stay tuned for highlights of our instructors who represent our communities of color and specifics about available events coming up!!

Past Nature4All Diversity Instructors

Alfie Fearrington

“My journey in birding not only fuels my soul but also inspires my dedication to wildfire conservation”

Alfie has served as Birding Guide for several of our Nature4All Diversity events. Alfie was one of the recipients of the Haw River Assembly Sustainability Scholarship in 2023 and has been taking birding classes through Cornell.

Raphael Darden of Xplore Kayak

“I founded Xplore Kayak Tours not just as a business, but as a movement. It started with a simple desire for freedom, the thrill of the paddle in hand, and the untamed world ahead. When no outfitter could match my vision, I created my own path – one kayak, one friend, one weekend at a time.”

Raphael is the owner of Xplore Kayak Tours, which is more than a veteran-owned business. It’s a pledge to every soul that craves the unbounded – to feel safe, supported, and empowered.

Stephanie Winfrey of Black Butterfly Swim Club of Winston Salem

“I started the black butterfly swim club of Winston-Salem in 2021 and the club has grown from 2 registered club members to 25”.

Stephanie led a Water Confidence workshop at Jordan Lake for the Nature4All Series. She is a full-time nurse practitioner in cardiology. Her interest turned passion was and is to teach minority women to swim and practice water safety. She since has been certified by the United States Masters Swimming as an adult learn to swim instructor and also obtained her personal trainer’s certificate (NASM certified) to specifically train swimmers on land.
