In the last legislative session, a proposed Firefighting training facility in Stanley County aimed to use toxic firefighting foams containing PFAS for training firefighters.
This week our advocacy team confirmed that the burn pit at the Stanley County firefighting training facility will be completely PFAS free! It will use PFAS free alternatives to test the efficacy and safety of these firefighting foams for use across the state and across the country. This is a sign of a changing attitude in the research community and a show of solidarity from our state legislators to our firefighters. We are not willing to put the health of our first responders, who risk their lives for us every day, in jeopardy for the sake of research.
(PFAS, short for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, are a group of man-made chemicals that are resistant to water, oil, and heat. Exposure to certain PFAS can lead to adverse health outcomes, including cancer, hormone disruption, immune system effects, and developmental issues.)
