Virtual State of The Haw Event
Due to expected inclement weather conditions, the State of Haw event scheduled for tomorrow at Graham Library will now be held virtually on Thursday, February 20, from 6-7 pm. We will discuss key findings from our 2024 State Of The Haw report that will allow community members to learn about their local water quality and pollution issues!
Sign up here to register, and you will receive an email with the ZOOM link for tomorrow: bit.ly/StateOfHaw

Trash Trap Clean-Out!
Come volunteer to help us remove trash from our litter traps! These traps sit in urban creeks and streams, keeping manmade trash from entering main waterways. These devices are built to withstand the rigors of flashy rain events yet are passive enough not to harm the local fauna. Roadside littering accounts for approximately 75% of the trash in our nation’s waterways. Each time it rains, trash is funneled through our storm drain systems directly into our creeks. No filters or other mechanisms are in place to keep the trash from entering our waterways. We have multiple trash trap locations in the watershed, so please check out our form below to find the one closest to you!
Sign up for our Trash Trap list-serv here for updates and receive the monthly form confirming your attendance. Volunteers must pre-register in advance to ensure we have enough equipment for all and have enough staff or Trash Trap leaders onsite.

River Watch Training
Looking to start a River Watch team? Join us for our quarterly scheduled training on Saturday, March 1, 2025 (10 AM – 12 PM), right before collection time! New teams require training and can sign up here. Are you already an existing team but want to review some basics? You can join us too! Just email events@hawriver.org.

Water Wonders with Haw River Assembly!
Celebrating Chatham Creek Week, Haw River Assembly experts will lead a special *outdoor* Science Club for K-5th graders! Participants will engage in interactive water-related activities and learn the importance of water quality protection. From looking at macroinvertebrates to watching a 3-D watershed model demonstration, participants will learn how humans can play a positive role in the watershed. Dress to get messy!
Location: Chatham Community Library (197 NC Hwy 87 N Pittsboro, NC 27312)
Contact and email address for signing up for the program: No registration required! Have questions, email kathleen.pierce@chathamlibraries.org.

Haw River Clean-Up-A-Thon!
Join us for the Clean Up-A-Thon on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025! Our clean-up event has been raising watershed-wide awareness about the impacts of our consumption habits and bringing people together at the river and local creeks for 35 years. Clean-ups are a popular way to take action for the natural spaces we love the most and what an amazing way to show off your love for the river than to start right in your community!
Clean-up teams should each have a designated “leader” or “coordinator” to fill out the Google Form: https://forms.gle/KnJjJmnQPcm7hbNB9
Completing this form will help tell us whether HRA will need to help you choose a clean-up location, provide supplies, and potentially arrange trash pick-up for your team!
We’ll be accepting team sign-ups through March 6th, 2025, as supplies and locations can become limited quickly. Individuals should reach out to events@hawriver.org if they’re looking to join other teams or perform a solo cleanup.

Forsyth Creek Week: Headwaters Hike!
Grab your hiking shoes and join Haw River Assembly for a hike to Haw River headwaters in eastern Kernersville! The Haw River has its source in the springs arising from the land east of Kernersville in Forsyth County. These small streams join together into a river as it meanders across the top of Guilford County through the wetlands and old beaver dams. Learn about the Haw River Watershed, connect with other river lovers, and enjoy the beauty of nature! We ask that the participants be 12 years of age or older. Dogs are allowed.
